Hawaiʻi Island public schools to close Thursday and Friday; Maui County schools to close Friday ahead of Tropical Storm Nolo

All Hawaiʻi State Department of Education public schools and offices on Hawaiʻi Island will be closed Thursday, Sept. 24, and Friday, Sept. 25, while HIDOE schools and offices in Maui County will be closed Friday, Sept. 25, due to anticipated severe weather associated with Tropical Storm Nolo.

All school-sponsored activities, athletics, extracurricular activities and other school events in the affected counties are canceled on their respective closure days. Weekend activities and events may also be canceled depending on weather conditions.

The precautionary closures are intended to allow families and employees to prepare for the approaching storm and avoid potentially hazardous travel conditions. Heavy rainfall and flooding could affect road access, student transportation and the ability to safely operate school campuses.

The Department is coordinating with state and county emergency management officials as it monitors the storm’s progress. School teams are taking steps to secure campuses and prepare facilities ahead of the anticipated weather.

Public schools and Department offices on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi are scheduled to remain open at this time, subject to changing weather conditions.
