AAA Hawaiʻi: Gas prices rise 9 cents over past week

Hawaiʻi drivers are continuing to feel the pain at the pump, with gas prices rising week over week amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz, and uncertainty in the global oil market, according to the AAA Hawaiʻi Weekend Gas Watch.

The statewide average price for regular unleaded is $5.57 per gallon, 9 cents higher than last week and $1.10 higher than the same time last year. The national average is $4.48 per gallon, 5 cents higher than last week and $1.32 higher than a year ago.

At $5.57 per gallon, Hawaiʻi has the second-highest average gas price in the nation, behind California at $6.23. Washington ranks third at $5.54.

In Kahului, the average price is $5.64 per gallon, 12 cents higher than last week and $1.20 higher than a year ago. In Līhuʻe, the average price for regular unleaded is $5.80 per gallon, 8 cents higher than last week and 82 cents higher than a year ago.

In Honolulu, the average price for regular unleaded is $5.50 per gallon, 8 cents higher than last week and $1.11 higher than a year ago. In Hilo, the average is $5.71 per gallon, 12 cents higher than last week and $1.07 higher than a year ago.

“Gas prices continue to climb nationwide, with drivers in Hawaiʻi paying some of the highest prices at the pump,” said AAA Hawaiʻi spokesperson Kandace Redd. “Typically, the start of autumn brings lower gas prices, but lingering volatility around the Strait of Hormuz and elevated crude oil prices are putting upward pressure on what drivers pay at the pump. Drivers can save by shopping around, looking for discounts, and comparing prices. Some retailers, including grocery stores, offer fuel discounts. Tools like the free AAA Mobile app can also help drivers find the cheapest gas nearby.”
