9 a.m. Update: HECO responds to scattered power outages as Hurricane Nolo slowly moves westward

Hawaiian Electric has been responding throughout the night to outages in various areas of Hawaiʻi Island as Hurricane Nolo moves slowly westward. The company continues to encourage customers to prepare for possible power outages as strong winds and heavy rain remain in the forecast.

As of 7:30 a.m., crews were working to restore about 626 who are without power on Hawaiʻi Island in areas of Ocean View, Hāmākua, Lower Puna, Ka‘ū and North Kohala. There are no major outages on Maui County or Oʻahu, with crews addressing outages impacting less than 40 customers in each county.

However, saturated ground conditions from recent rainfall continue to increase the risk of falling trees and vegetation-related damage to electrical equipment, even in areas not experiencing the strongest winds.

The company’s crews, contractors and support staff remain ready to respond as conditions allow. However, customers should ensure emergency supplies are stocked, and phones and other essential devices are charged as they prepare for the possibility of extended outages from severe weather impacts.
