12,370 on Maui without power due to strong winds from Hurricane Nolo; HECO monitoring wildfire risk

(Update: 7 a.m., Sept. 27, 2026) About 12,370 customers in West Maui and Upcountry are without power due to strong winds from Hurricane Nolo as the storm continues its westward track south of the state. As of 6 a.m., an additional 3,900 customers are without power on the windward side of Oʻahu due to storm effects. These outages were not a PSPS, and Hawaiian Electric crews are standing by to begin inspections at first light as the first step in the restoration process.

Hawaiian Electric is monitoring high winds and dry conditions across its service territories, which may lead to an increased risk of wildfires. The company has implemented all safety measures to reduce the risk of wildfires during severe weather conditions.

At this time, Public Safety Power Shutoff is in a watch condition, meaning that if weather conditions intensify in the next 24 hours, Hawaiian Electric may proactively shut off power in communities with high risk of wildfire. During this watch period, customers in these areas are urged to initiate their own emergency plans and prepare for the possibility of extended power outages. Safety measures include protective devices, settings and restoration protocols that may result in more frequent and longer outages.

As of 6 a.m. today,

Maui County: About 12,370 customers are without power in West Maui, Haʻikū and Upcountry, with the majority of the outages in West Maui. These outages were not a PSPS. Yesterday afternoon, Hawaiian Electric deenergized power lines in the area of the brushfire in Olowalu, impacting about 740 customers. Early this morning, the remaining areas of West Maui, from Lahaina to Kapalua, lost power due to severe weather conditions. When the weather improves and it is safe to enter these areas, power lines must be inspected, and any damage must be repaired before power can be restored. This may involve ground crews and aerial inspections using helicopters and drones which need to be done during daylight hours for safety and visibility. Customers should plan for extended outages.
O‘ahu: About 3,900 customers are without power in windward Oʻahu, mainly in Kahuku and Hauʻula.
Hawaiʻi Island: There are no major outages on Hawai‘i Island.
