Lahaina Civic Center emergency shelter site closed

With Hawaiian Electric Co. (HECO) reporting that service has been restored to nearly all West Maui customers, the County of Maui closed its emergency shelter at Lahaina Civic Center Gym at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, 2026.

Charging stations and Starlink satellite internet connectivity had been available at the site for residents affected by power outages. The emergency shelter was opened on Saturday, Sept. 26, after an evacuation order was issued for Olowalu Village due to a fast-moving brush fire nearby.

Mandatory evacuation orders were lifted for Olowalu Village at 5:45 a.m. today, after the brush fire that burned more than 100 acres was reported to be 95% contained, according to the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). Residents are advised to use caution in the area, as hazards, including smoke impacts, may still be present. Fire crews remain on scene and continue working in the area.

On Monday afternoon, HECO reported that crews had restored service to nearly all 10,000 customers in West Maui after completing inspections and repairs to the transmission line serving the area. The weather-related outage had been reported Sunday morning while Maui County was under a High Wind Warning issued by the National Weather Service as Hurricane Nolo passed south of the Hawaiian Islands.
