The County of Maui Department of Housing announced the successful completion of the Maui Homeowner Assistance Fund Program, which provided critical financial assistance to Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi homeowners experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since its launch on May 6, 2024, the Maui Homeowner Assistance Fund Program provided financial assistance to 500 homeowner households, totaling more than $19 million toward eligible mortgage payments, utility expenses and Homeowners Association payments. The program concluded Sept. 30, 2026.
Provided by the US Department of Treasury, the Maui Homeowner Assistance Fund Program was a one-time COVID-19 financial assistance program designed to mitigate financial hardships associated with the coronavirus pandemic. Funding helped eligible homeowners prevent mortgage delinquencies, defaults, foreclosures, and loss of utilities or home energy services.
After receiving the federal funds, the State of Hawai’i granted a subaward to the County of Maui Department of Housing, which selected Catholic Charities of Hawai’i to administer the program.
“The successful completion of this program reflects what can be accomplished when homeowners, community partners, service providers and County staff come together with a shared commitment to strengthening our community,” County Department of Housing Director Richard E. Mitchell said. “We are especially grateful to Catholic Charities of Hawai‘i for administering the program and to the Hawai‘i Housing Finance and Development Corporation for its coordination, guidance and support throughout this critical effort. Their partnership was instrumental to its success.”
