Maui to preview 120th anniversary celebration of Filipinos in Hawaiʻi

On Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, Maui will preview the celebration of the 120th Anniversary of Filipinos in Hawaiʻi, which will be held on Dec. 20, 2026.
The December event, themed “Sakada Sacrifices… Our Future” is presented by the Bahay Kubo Heritage Foundation and Binhi at Ani.
In 2015, then Gov. David Ige signed into law Act 007 which established Dec. 20 as “Sakada Day” in the State of Hawaiʻi. Act 007 recognized “the Filipino community has contributed significantly and substantially to the history, economy, culture and heritage of Hawaiʻi” and stated the establishment of Dec. 20 as Sakada Day was to “recognize, acknowledge, and understand the historical significance of the arrival of the first sakadas in Hawaiʻi.”
In addition to previewing the December event, an original painting by Maui artist Philip Sabado will be unveiled. The painting which was commissioned by Tante and Tilie Urban will be used as part of the statewide celebration of the 120thAnniversary of Filipinos in Hawaiʻi. “I am honored to be able to use my talents to help the celebration of the 120thanniversary,” said Sabado. “As a descendant of a Sakada, I know the importance of preserving the history to remind the future generations of the sacrifices made by the Sakadas.”
“My wife Tilie and I are also Sakada descendants,” added Urban “and we are fortunate to be able to commission such an important segment of our celebration. The Sabado painting will be seen throughout the State and promoted through social media to reach almost every corner of the world. It’s something Maui is very proud to be a part of.”
Annalissa Burgos of Hawaii News Now will host Sunday’s preview event.
