51-year-old pedestrian suffers life-threatening injuries in near-fatal collision on South Kīhei Road

A 51-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a pickup truck while walking on South Kīhei Road near the intersection of Waimahaihai Street on Monday night.
The near-fatal collision was reported at approximately 8:32 p.m. on Nov. 2, 2026.
Police say a preliminary investigation reveals the pedestrian, who is known to frequent Kīhei, was walking across the street (southeast corner to northwest corner) when he was struck by a gray 2016 GMC Canyon pickup traveling southbound on South Kīhei Road.
The pedestrian was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. Police say the investigation reveals that the pedestrian was not using a marked crosswalk at the time of the incident.
The operator of the GMC, a 17-year-old Kīhei male, reported no injuries. The operator of the GMC was wearing a seatbelt, according to police. The involvement of speed, alcohol, and drugs has not been determined yet, as the investigation is ongoing.
