Maui Man Named State Outstanding Senior Volunteer

A Maui man was selected as the state’s 2013 outstanding senior volunteer by a national home care network provider, according to an announcement made today.

Fred Ruge, 82, of Wailuku, was named the winner of the Salute to Seniors service award issued by the Home Instead Senior Care network.

Ruge’s volunteer work reportedly includes service at the Salvation Army, Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Fund, and the Veterans Association.

Network officials say Ruge often drives other seniors to events and doctors appointments, and helps them to fill out military benefit forms.

As the state winner, Ruge will be able to make a $500 donation to the non-profit of his choice. He will also be considered for the organization’s national award.

“Fred represents so well the dedication and commitment that make senior volunteers such a value to their communities,” said Jeff Huber, president of Home Instead, Inc. in a press release.

“He has proven once again that age is meaningless when it comes to making a difference. So many charities, nonprofit organizations and faith communities could not do the work they are doing without selfless volunteers such as Fred,” said Huber.

Organization officials say Home Instead Senior Care network is the world’s largest provider of non-medical in-home care services for seniors.  Officials say there are currently nearly 1,000 independently owned and operated franchises located around the world.
