Visitor Injured in Jump at ʻOheʻo Pools

Maui firefighters were dispatched to extricate a male visitor who suffered injuries after jumping into one of the ʻOheʻo pools in the Kīpahulu area of East Maui, authorities said.
The 21-year-old man from Chicago, Illinois suffered a possible dislocated left knee when he jumped into one of the pools below the bridge and landed on a rock, said Maui Fire Captain Bram DenHaan.
The incident was reported at 1:57 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at the lower-end of the pools, within the Kīpahulu National Park boundaries.
We received unconfirmed reports that the man jumped from an area estimated at between 15- to 20-feet above the pool.
Hāna firefighters hiked down to the area and secured the victim into a basket, fire officials said.
According to Capt. DenHaan, the man was then extricated from the area by the department’s Air-1 helicopter and transported to a landing zone where medics assessed his injuries.
The visitor was transported by American Medical Response by ground via the Kaupō side of the island to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded this afternoon to a rescue in the Kīpahulu area of East Maui.
Authorities say a male victim appears to be in stable condition after jumping into one of the pools below the bridge.
Firefighters from Kahului and Hāna, the department’s Air-1 helicopter, medics, and Kīpahulu rangers were dispatched to the scene.
