Electronic Waste Accepted at Weekend E-Cycling Event
By Wendy Osher
A weekend “e-cycling” event offers the public an opportunity to get rid of unwanted electronic equipment in an environmentally conscious way.
5A Rent-A-Space in Lahaina will accept electronic waste equipment on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 7 a.m. to noon at the company’s parking lot located at 3600 Lower Honoapiʻilani Road.
The items collected will be delivered to the Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store Warehouse in Wailuku, for refurbishment and recycling.
Saturday’s Electronics E-Cycling event is being held in partnership with the County of Maui Electronics Recycling program.
A list of items that will be accepted include: TV’s, keyboards, laptops, computers, computer monitors, PDA’s, MP3 players, CRT & LCD monitors, printers, scanners, DVD & VCR players, telephones, cell phones, fax machines, stereos, speakers, video and digital cameras, and microwaves.
According to event organizers, useable equipment is donated to Habitat families, schools or nonprofits. Items that are not useable or re-sellable will be shipped to the mainland for recycling.
Items that will NOT be accepted include: appliances and hazardous waste.
Organizers say the E-Cycling program guarantees responsible recycling of electronics byproducts, and helps to keep the island clean and green.
