A 35-year-old woman from Westlake Village, California, was pulled from the water at Ukumehame after her boyfriend found her floating and unresponsive, officials tell Maui Now.

The incident was reported at 3:53 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, near mile 13 of the Honoapiʻilani Highway in West Maui.

“The woman was stand-up paddle boarding with her boyfriend when she fell and hit her head on the board,” said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

“The boyfriend was able to get her back on the board where she regained consciousness,” according to Mainaga. Officials say other stand up paddlers assisted the boyfriend in getting the woman to shore, where lifeguards from the Ocean Safety division administered first aid.

Responding firefighters from the department’s Ladder 3 in Lahaina and medics from the American Medical Response arrived on scene and took over patient care.

The woman was then transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition, Mainaga said.
