Maui HS Junior Wins $500 for Essay on Volunteering

Maui High School junior Christopher Kim was recognized by the Hawaiʻi State Bar Association and the Hawaiʻi Access to Justice Commission for an essay he wrote on volunteerism.

Kim and five other winners received cash awards of $500 each for their entries and were recognized during a ceremony at the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court in Honolulu last week.

The essay contest for 10th-12th graders, focused on the theme of meaningful volunteering, and was designed as part of a national effort to raise awareness about the increased need for free legal services.

The other essay award recipients included: Tram Ha of Moanalua High School; Da Hea Kim of Mid Pacific Institute; Zane Kunimura of Waiākea High School; Casey Nakamura of Kapaʻa High School; and Benjamin Steeper of ʻAiea High School.

Five attorneys were also honored at the ceremony for their outstanding volunteer service to the community.
