Weekend Offers Horror, Wonder and Crashing Cars

Holy smokes, it’s November 1.

It seems like just yesterday it was April.

Halloween is over, which means you can pretty much count on it being full-bore winter wonderland holiday season talk for the next two months. Merry Christmas, everybody!

But until then, enjoy the brief 24-hour intermission while they clearance the black and orange candy and costumes to make room for fake plastic pine trees, blow up snowmen, and ornaments galore.

Absolute Last Chance to Be Taken by Wonder

Today and tomorrow, Nov. 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. are your last chances to take in the MACC Schaefer Gallery’s artist-in-residence Wes Bruce’s unique installation, which transforms the gallery into a fictional place to explore and discover artifacts and remnants of its inhabitants.

‘Taken by Wonder’ is an interactive work.

Bruce has created 2700 square foot structural installation within the Schaefer International Gallery. According to the MACC, “his enduring concept for ‘Taken By Wonder’ has many pulls centralized around the fictional research space of a group of outsiders and the discovery of their existence on an unknown island. There are blurred boundaries and hypothetical concepts alluding to origins, physical and cultural development, biological characteristics, and social customs. Clues within the layers will lead us to believe that the inhabitants have only just left the space, stirring up a curious voyeurism and questioning.

Visitors are free to explore the caverns and chambers of the space, finding artifacts, maps, and remnants of world civilizations, photographs, field samples, illustrations and writings.

The event is free to the public and includes artsy craftsy stuff for kids to do.

Beware the moldy book room.

Best Opportunity to Dine for a Good Cause

Tonight, Ferraroʻs Bar e Ristorante at Four Seasons Resort Maui will host a school garden-inspired dinner with sunset views and wine pairings to raise funds for more than 2,000 students participating in Grow Some Good programs.

The four-course menu is prepared by Chef Nicholas Porreca.

The meal starts at 6 p.m. with lemongrass basil margaritas accompanied by pesto flatbread, tomato confit, and taro chips.

At 6:30 p.m. begins the main dinner with wine pairings with highlights such as grilled line-caught ono, ko sugar cane lemongrass pork ribs with braised kale and Evening Land Pinot Noir 2009.

Best Reason to Do the Time Warp

Tonight heralds the return of Maui’s “Thriller” zombie dancers as part of the annual Historic Iao Theater’s “Rocky Horror Picture Show” party.

The classic audience participation film opens with straight-laced couple Brad and Janet.

After Janet accepts Brad’s marriage proposal, they soon drive away, only to get lost in the rain.

The pair stumble upon the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite who is holding the annual convention of visitors from the planet Transsexual.

Frank-N-Furter unveils his creation, a young man named Rocky Horror, who fears the doctor and rejects his sexual advances. When Frank-N-Furter announces that he is returning to the galaxy Transylvania, Riff Raff the butler and Magenta the maid declare that they have plans of their own.

The show starts at 8 p.m. and complete Rocky Horror party packs (toast, squirt guns, party hats, gloves, noisemakers, etc) are available at the theater for $12.

Best Excuse to Plant a Tree

On Saturday, November 2 from 9 a.m. to noon is the Arbor Day Hawaiian Tree Giveaway at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens.

This marks the tenth time they’ve given away 1000 Hawaiian trees, free, to anyone willing and able to care for them.

The giveaway is limited to one plant, per person of any age.

Maui Nui Botanical Garden is located at 150 Kanaloa Avenue in Kahului.

Best Excuse for Laughing at a Car Crash

Also on Saturday, Paradise Speedway Most hosts their annual Demolition Derby.

Drivers are already pre-registered, but spectator gates opens 3:30 p.m.

Time Trials begin at sunset and the main event races follow.

Hang in there, champ, because the actual Demolition Derby is the last up as the final race of the evening.

Admission is $10 for adult, $5 for kids six to 12, and free for those five and under.

Best Chance to Enjoy Sunset at Sea

On Saturday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m., join Kai Kanani Sailing and Capische? Restaurant of Wailea for a special sunset cruise aboard the Kai Kanani.

Award-winning chef Chris Kulis of Capische? is on board preparing French Riviera Provence-themed bites; specifically, tapas crudos paired with regional wines.

The price to attend the cruise is $105.13 per person if purchased online or $109 plus tax if you call Kai Kanani Sailing at 808-879-7218.

Check in for the cruise is 3:30 p.m.

Best Chance to Sit in a Garbage Truck. Probably.

Although no doubt aimed at kids, Holoholo Ka’a 2013 offers attendees a chance to sit in a fire truck, ambulance, limousine bus, cement truck, antique car, or garbage truck and pretend to drive and even honk the horn.

The event is a fundraiser benefiting Hawaiian Language Immersion Education Programs.

The event lasts from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the University of Hawaii Maui College Rear Parking Lot.

Admission is $1.
