Maui Workline Escapee Kauhaahaa in Custody

A Maui inmate who had walked away from a work line in Waikapū more than two weeks ago has since been located and is now in police custody, state officials said.

Reid I.L. Kauhaahaa escaped during work detail with the Maui Community Correctional Center at around noon on Monday, Oct. 28.

He was serving a five year sentence for second-degree burglary, and second-degree theft, and was scheduled for a parole hearing on Feb. 28, 2014.

Officials with the state Department of Public Safety say an escape charge will be added to Kauhaahaa’s record.

Kauhaahaa was in the work furlough program and was on “community custody” status, which means that he was allowed to work in the community, and was considered a lower risk than inmates under “minimum custody” status.

Maui Police returned Kauhaahaa to the Maui Community Correctional Center facility on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 14, 2013, according to Toni Schwartz with the state Department of Public Safety.
