6 Maui Seniors Participate in Schatz Internship

Six high school seniors from Maui County were among a list of 30 from across the state who were selected for an inaugural internship program hosted by US Senator Brian Schatz.

The Maui students include: Ethan Finberg, Seabury Hall; Kylie Nathan, Baldwin High School; Kauaikekai Kealoha Kahakauwila Lara, Kīhei Charter School; Sarah Holter, Kamehameha Schools; Trent Hori, Maui High School; and Megan Kamalei Batangan, Kamehameha Schools-Maui.

The Schatz Seniors Internship Program is designed to provide a hands-on learning experience for students interested in learning about the US Senate, the announcement said.

“Our seniors recently attended our Hawai‘i Family Issues Summit where they worked with our community outreach team to garner feedback from residents about the things that are top-of-mind here at home,” said Senator Schatz in a press release statement.

During the exercise, Senator Schatz said student interns worked to identify issues of interest in their schools and community.

As a requirement for participation, students must maintain a 2.0 minimum GPA.

According to Senator Schatz, interns were selected based on their “community involvement, diversity of interests and demonstrated leadership qualities.”

Applications for next year’s program will be available in August 2014 at www.schatz.senate.gov.
