One Resident Displaced in Sunset Terrace Apartment Fire

A fire at the Sunset Terrace apartments in West Maui displaced one individual and forced the temporary evacuation of an estimated 50 residents, fire officials said.

The incident was reported at 6:03 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, and was contained to a single unit on the third floor, according to department reports.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found smoke and flames showing from the unit, located at 3626 Lower Honoapiʻilani Road, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

The fire was called under control at 7:18 p.m., and did not extend beyond the unit, which was unoccupied at the time of the fire, officials said.

According to FS Chief Mainaga, no injuries were reported, and the lone occupant of the involved unit will be staying with relatives.

The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damage including $60,000 in damage to the structure and $40,000 in damage to its contents, said FS Chief Mainaga.

The cause of the fire remains “undetermined” until more information can be obtained, officials said.

Other units responding to the scene included Ladder-3 from Lahaina, Engine-11 from Nāpili, Engine-1 from Wialuku, and Hazmat-10 from Kahului.
