Molokaʻi Landfill Reopens After Suspected Ordnance Detonated
By Wendy Osher
The Molokaʻi Landfill was reopened today after an explosive ordnance team detonated a suspected piece of unexploded ordnance found at the facility on Monday, county officials said.
The discovery was made by workers on Monday, Jan. 13, forcing the indefinite closure of the facility.
“The Maui Police Department contacted the military and an explosive ordnance unit detonated the object today,” said Maui Communications Director Rod Antone in a press release this afternoon.
“The all-clear was given prior to 10:30 a.m. for the landfill to reopen to the public,” he said.
On another note, a staffing shortage is expected to result in the delayed opening of the facility on Thursday, Jan. 16.
