60-Year Old Woman Airlifted After Fall at “Jaws” Lookout

A 60-year-old Maui woman was airlifted to safety after slipping and falling on a trail near the big-wave “Jaws” look-out in the Peʻahi area on the North Shore.

The incident was reported at 12:41 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, on one of the trails leading to the ocean, according to Fire Department reports.

Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said the patient, who suffered a compound fracture to her right ankle, was stabilized and airlifted to a landing zone established near the Hāna Highway in Haiʻkū.

She was then transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition, said FS Chief Mainaga.

Units responding to the scene included Engine-2 out of Pāʻia, Rescue-10 out of Kahului, and the Department’s Air-1 helicopter.
