Hiker Treated and Released After Fall at Pīpīwai Trail

Rangers from the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park helped to stabilize a 65-year-old man who tripped and fell while hiking on the Pīpīwai Trail on Wednesday, park officials said.

Initial reports indicated the man sustained a possible head injury, but responding crews say the man was able to walk out on his own.

The incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, about a mile into the trail, located within the National Park boundaries in East Maui.

The Hāna Fire Department was dispatched, but were not needed on scene upon arrival.

Park officials say the man was treated by Hāna medics, and was driven to the Hāna Health center where he was treated and released.
