Bears Lose Eldridge in Loss to Maryknoll, 66-61
By Rodney S. Yap
Third-seeded Baldwin High School played without its best player, Teva Eldridge, in the critical fourth quarter Thursday against Maryknoll and his absence ultimately proved too much to overcome as the Bears dropped their quarterfinal game to the Spartans, 66-61, at Radford Gymnasium.
Eldridge sparked Baldwin’s 28-point explosion in the third quarter with a jumper to open the second half, but the senior swingman would suffer a foot injury midway through the period and never returned to the game. He finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, including eight boards in the first half.
The Maui Interscholastic League champions fell to 13-2, while Maryknoll improved to 12-3, advancing to the 7 p.m. semifinal against No. 2 Farrington at the Neal Blaisdell Arena tonight.
Top-seeded Iolani will play Campbell in the 5 p.m. semifinal. The Red Raiders defeated Lahainaluna, 54-32, to move on, while unseeded Campbell upset No. 4 Konawaena, 58-53.
The Lunas face Konawaena today at 1 p.m., followed by Baldwin and Mililani at 3 p.m. Both consolation games will be played at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.
The Bears narrowed a 14-point halftime deficit to one, 50-49, with 29 seconds remaining in the third period. Baldwin cut the lead to five, 43-37, when Eldridge left the game. Meanwhile, Ryan Garces caught on fire, scoring half the team’s points in the third quarter, including four 3-pointers.
Baldwin cut the Spartans’ lead to three points, four times in the final period, but Maryknoll was solid at the free-throw line down the stretch. Not to mention the clutch baskets Kaleb Gilmore and Joshua Burnett made in Eldridge’s absence. Gilmore finished with a game-high 26 points and Burnett added 22.
Baldwin’s Philip Thomas picked up the offensive slack with 17 points, including 12 in the second half.
