‘Cutting for Stone’ Author/Physician to Speak on Maui

This Saturday, March 8, Dr. Abraham Verghese, author of the New York Time’s bestseller Cutting for Stone, is speaking at the MACC.

The 2009 novel, which tells the tale of Indian twins raised in a mission in Ethiopia as the country undergoes major political transformation and civil unrest, was one of Amazon and Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of the year and also won an Indies Choice Book Award.

Verghese, himself of Indian heritage and raised in Ethiopia, began his career as a medical doctor and is currently a tenured professor for the Theory and Practice of Medicine and Associate Chair of Internal Medicine at Stanford University.

As a result, the author will be speaking on “The Connection Between Literature and Medicine,” and reflecting on the patient-physician relationship.

The event is being held in the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater and is sponsored by FIM Group.  All ticket sales benefit The Merwin Conservancy.

Speaking of which, tickets are $35, which includes a hosted reception and Verghese will be available to sign books during the post-event dessert reception in the McCoy Courtyard.
