Maui Police Updates: Promotions, Tip-A-Cop, CSI Camp

The Maui Police Department announced the promotion of two individuals to the rank of lieutenant this week, provided an update on their annual Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for Special Olympics, and released information on a youth CSI Camp planned in June.

Lieutenant Promotions

Maui Police Chief Gary Yabuta announced the promotion of detectives Ryan Rodrigues and Scott Migita to the rank of lieutenant. Both promotions take effect on April 16.

Tip-A-Cop for Special Olympics

The Maui Police Department also announced they raised a total of $3,412 during the annual “Tip A Cop” fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics.

The funds were raised on Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15 at the Outback Steakhouse in Kīhei.

Department officials say the funds will be used to assist Special Olympics athletes with travel expenses for upcoming events.

CSI Camp, June 23-27, 2014

The Maui Police Department is hosting a Crime Scene Investigator Camp from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 23-27, 2014, at the County of Maui Forensic Facility in Wailuku.

The camp is open to interested junior and senior high school students. Interested individuals are asked to submit a CSI Camp Application, available from the school guidance counselor, detailing their background and interests.

The application process includes a brief interview in person, and the completion of a free online training course.

Department officials say the Camp is limited to 12 students, and there is no cost to participate.

Highlights include: presentations on the FBI, DEA, prosecutors, UHMC Criminal Justice program; a tour of the Wailuku Police Station and crime scene photography; crime scene diagramming, blood stain pattern analysis; testing for blood bullet trajectory determination; casting footwear impressions and fingerprints; evidence collection and human remains recovery; criminalist work including drug and polygraph analysis; and autopsy information.
