Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra to Perform Spring Concert

The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra will present their annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 3 p.m. in the HP Baldwin Auditorium.

The event is free and open to the public and features more than 29 student musicians in grades 2 to 12, on strings, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.

The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra is also comprised of students from 11 public schools, three private schools, and one home school family.

This year’s Spring Concert will include accompaniment by two adult violin students and guest artists Richard Tadaki, Sue Nakama, Stephen Rodrigues, Tami Saito, Julius Galanto and Cody Sarmiento.

The Beginning Violin Class, under the direction of Rona Landrigan, will perform “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star Variation,” “French Folk Song,” “Mozart Serenade,” Beethoven’s “Folk Dance” and “Ode to Joy,” “Frere Jacques,” and “Can Can.”

The String Ensemble, also under the direction of Landrigan, will perform Pachelbel’s “Canon in D,” “Divertimento,” “Minuetto from Twelve Duets” by Mozart, “Valse Serenade,” “Edelweiss” from “The Sound of Music,” and the Beatles’ “Penny Lane.”

The Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Lance Jo, will perform “Farandole” by Bizet, Verdi’s “Overture to Nabucco,” Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro,” “American Folk Rhapsody No. 1,” “My Fair Lady,” and “A Salute to Richard Rodgers.” Additionally, violin soloist WenLu Duffy will perform the “Concerto in G Minor,” composed by Max Bruch.

The nonprofit Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra works to expand and enhance music education on Maui by providing opportunities for students of all skill levels to develop.

Auditions for the 2014-2015 philharmonic orchestra season will be announced on the orchestra’s website in June.  No audition is needed for the beginning violin class.
