Maui OnStage Presents “The Miracle Worker” Story of Hellen Keller

Maui OnStage presents the inspiring story of Helen Keller, “The Miracle Worker” at the Historic ʻĪao Theater this month.

Performances take place May 11-25, excluding May 17, and are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. on Sundays.

“The name of Helen Keller is known around the world as a symbol of courage in the face of overwhelming odds, yet she was much more than a symbol. She was a woman of luminous intelligence, high ambition and great accomplishment,” a Maui OnStage announcement said.

The story is based on the true experience of Keller, who was both deaf and blind, but eventually came to change the perspective towards individuals with disabilities through her own personal triumphs.

A Maui OnStage overview of the play credits Keller with the following quote:

“Once I knew only darkness and stillness… my life was without past or future… but a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness and my heart leaped to the rapture of living. Death is no more than passing from one room into another. But there’s a difference for me, you know – Because in that other room I shall be able to see.”

In the Maui OnStage presentation, Keller is portrayed by Pua Kepler, and Jessica Chernicki plays the role of her teacher, Anne Sullivan.

The stage play is written by William Gibson and directed by Rick Scheideman.
