Maui County Unemployment Rate Falls to 4.6% in April

Maui County’s unemployment rate for April was 4.6%, down from the 4.9% reported a month earlier, and the 4.8% recorded at the same time last year, according to new information released by the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

The Island of Maui in Maui County recorded a slightly lower rate of 4.5% in April 2014, down from the 4.8% rate recorded in March, and the 4.7% rate reported in April of last year.

The Island of Lānaʻi continued to record the state’s lowest unemployment rate at 2.1%, down slightly from 2.7% the month before, and from the 2.4% rate recorded at the same time last year.

Molokaʻi continued to have the state’s highest unemployment rate of 8.8%–up from 8.2% in March, and the 8.4% rate recorded at the same time last year.

The Department of Labor and Industrial Relations noted that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state was 4.4% in April, down from the 4.5% rate from the month before, and down from the 4.8% rate recorded at the same time last year.  Department officials note that the last time the rate was 4.4% was in August of 2008, nearly six years ago.

According to the new data, there were 631,300 employed and 29,100  unemployed individuals in the state in April, which combines for a total seasonally adjusted labor force of 660,400.
