AARP Hosts Maui Fall Prevention Event

AARP Hawaiʻi hosts a free fall prevention workshop this weekend that brings together aging specialists and experts who will focus on preventing falls among older adults at home.

The workshop, entitled Simple Steps to Fall Prevention, Better Health and a Home for Life, runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 7, at the Kaunoa Senior Center in Pāʻia.

The AARP  cited information from the state Department of Health, noting that about 85 seniors die, 1,960 are hospitalized, and 8,700 are treated in emergency rooms due to falls statewide each year – resulting in $120 million in hospital and physician charges.

“As Maui’s population ages, many residents are looking for information that can help them live more independently and remain in their homes for as long as possible,” the event announcement said.

Participants will be presented with the latest research on fall prevention through vision screening, medication review, strength and balance, and home modification.

The workshop will also cover how individuals can modify their homes to make it safer and more age friendly; and take a look at technology that can be used to promote independence and comfort.

The workshop coincides with the state Department of Health’s Senior Fall Prevention Awareness Campaign that runs from May 29 to July 31.  The event is co-sponsored by the state Department of Health and the Hawaiʻi Disability and communication Access Board.  The Maui Fall Prevention Coalition and Assistive Technology Resource Centers of Hawaiʻi is also collaborating with workshop organizers.
