According to police reports, Szabo was operating a 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle, and was traveling south on the highway when he lost control of the motorcycle, crossed left of center, and collided into cement curbing located on the east shoulder of the roadway.

According to a preliminary report released by police, Szabo and his 45-year-old female passenger from Wailuku were both ejected from the motorcycle during the incident reported at around 7:16 p.m. on the highway, about 400 feet north of Piʻimauna Street.

Police say the female passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Szabo was also transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, but police say his condition deteriorated, and he was later transported to Kaiser Medical Center on Oʻahu, where he succumbed to his injuries and died on Friday, June 13, 2014.

Police say the involvement of alcohol has been determined to be a factor in the crash, and that both occupants were not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The crash was the thirteenth traffic fatality on Maui County roads this year compared to eight at the same time last year.
