1960s-Themed ‘Ruby’s Dinette’ Opens in Ka’anapali

Ruby’s Diner Inc. has announced the opening of 1960s-themed ‘Ruby’s Dinette’ in Ka’anapali, with special island-themed menu items for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ruby’s Diner Inc. is the Irvine, California-based operator of the 1940s-themed family restaurants (the 1960s theme for this restaurant is presumably a change to the usual formula).

The Ka’anapali “dinette” will be Ruby’s second location on Maui, with the other at Queen Ka’ahumanu Mall in Kahului.

The format fast-casual dinette, which debuts Friday, June 27 in Whalers Village, is a “recently introduced concept with design elements inspired by the Googie architecture of Los Angeles coffee shops once popular in the region when Ruby’s founder, Doug Cavanaugh, grew up,” according to the company.

The new Ruby’s Dinette features an “interior of wood tones, terrazzo counters, lava lamp, sputnik clock and amoeba-shaped cutouts and circle patterns. Classic posters dating from Maui in the early ’60s adorn the walls.”

Ruby’s usual items are available, such as shakes and malts, classic burgers, all-American sandwiches, fresh salads, and for breakfast, cinnamon roll French toast, an assortment of hot cakes, and egg dishes.

Offerings that pay tribute to Hawaii include Pineapple Hot Cakes (pancakes mixed with pineapple and topped with caramel drizzle and coconut sprinkles) and Macadamia Nut and White Chocolate Chip Hot Cakes (featuring Hawaiian macadamia nuts and white chocolate chips). For lunch or dinner, Ruby’s Aloha Burger, with teriyaki glaze and a grilled pineapple ring, and Ahi Burger, with Sriracha mayo and Asian slaw, are available. Hawaiian shake flavors include Piña Colada, Pineapple Banana and POG (pineapple, orange, and guava).
