Savor the Sunset Wine Tasting to Support Lahaina Library: July 8, 2010

The Rotary Club of Lahaina hosts a wine tasting fundraiser tonight in the hopes of raising at least $3,000 to improve the 55-year-old Historic Lahaina Public Library.  The event is co-sponsored by the Royal Lahaina Resort and will be held on the hotel grounds from 5:30 to 8:30 tonight, Thursday, July 8, 2010.

Tickets for the “Savor the Sunset” event are $35 each or $45 at the door can be purchased by calling the Royal Lahaina Resort at 661-3611, Extension 2291 or AAAAA Rent A Space at 669-5200.  Tables of 10 are being sold at a discounted price of $300 with advanced reservations. Donations are welcome. 

The first of its kind event will be held on the Royal Lahaina Resort’s ocean view lawn overlooking Moloka’i and Lana’i. Heavy pupus will be paired with delightful wines sipped to the music of the Royal Lahaina’s own musician, Josh Sumbucay. 

Guests will also receive discounts from the Royal Trading Co.extensive wine selection at the resort. Better Brands, another co-sponsor, is providing various selections of wines.

The event kicks off a scheduled three-year Rotary community project, with the hopes of raising funds to renovate the library facilities “to make our library a facility we can be proud of,” said event organizer and Rotary president-elect Carmen Karady.

Savor the Sunset also has the backing of the Maui Friends of the Library, a non-profit formed  in 1912 that operates a discount bookstore in Pu’unene. A large stock of books is available there for $1 or less, with proceeds benefiting libraries island-wide.  

Lahaina Public Librarian Madeleine Burchanan said she “is thrilled” with Rotary initiative.  Burchanan has used limited state funds in recent years to buy books and  other library materials instead of furnishings.
