List of Closures and Cancellations for Maui County

The following is a current summary of closures in Maui County due to impending tropical storms/hurricanes Iselle and Julio:

Park Closures:

• State Reserves, Trails: By Wednesday 6 p.m., Aug. 6, Maui’s Division of Forests and Wildlife will close all of its managed lands, including forest reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, natural area reserves, Na Ala Hele hiking trails, game management areas (including on Lanai); this closure also affects Polipoli State Park (persons with camping permits are being notified). The Division of State Parks will close state parks on Hawaiʻi island, Maui and Molokaʻi at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6.  The parks will remain closed until further notice. 
• Haleakalā National Park: To protect visitor safety, the Summit and Kīpahulu Districts of Haleakalā NP will close at noon Thursday afternoon in anticipation of heavy winds and rain. The park will not open for sunrise viewing on Friday morning. Park managers will assess conditions on Friday and re-open the park  once it is safe to do so. In anticipation of Tropical Storm Julio, no back country camping or cabin permits will be issued through the weekend. Existing weekend back country permits have been canceled. Also canceled are the Thursday Waikamoi hike (Summit District) and Saturday cultural demonstrations in the Kīpahulu District.
• County Parks Closures: The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation has announced the following closures of county facilities due to the anticipated inclement weather: ALL county swimming pools will close at noon on Thursday until further notice; Waiehu Golf Course will issue final tee times at noon on Thursday and remain closed until further notice; ALL county camping sites will be closed Thursday to Sunday; ALL community centers will be closed starting noon Thursday until further notice; ALL county beach parks will be closed all day Thursday until further notice; CORA-permitted (commercial) activities are canceled Thursday and Friday and until beach parks reopen; All other county parks will be closed Thursday at noon until further notice.

School Closures: 

• All public schools in Maui Maui and on Hawaii Island will close Thursday, Aug. 7. The state Department of Education has confirmed that the closure will remain in effect for Friday, Aug. 8. Designated school shelters will open to the public on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. including the following school shelters in Maui County: Baldwin High (Wailuku); Lokelani Intermediate (Kīhei); Kekaulike High (Upcountry); Hāna High & Elementary; Molokaʻi High; and Kilohana Elementary (Molokaʻi). An additional shelter at Lahaina Civic Center is also expected to open on Thursday afternoon.
• UH Maui College and its Education Centers in Hāna and Lahaina and on Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi will close at noon on Thursday, Aug. 7 and all day Friday, Aug. 8 due to anticipated severe weather. Weekend operations will also be suspended.  A full list of closures is available on our website at mauinow.com.
• Kamehameha Schools Maui: Due to the current weather situation, school will be closed on Friday, Aug. 8th to ensure the safety and well being of students, staff and families. All classes and after school activities including athletic practices, games, and campus meetings are cancelled for Friday, Aug. 8.
• Maui’s Catholic schools will close Thursday and Friday, including: St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School; St. Anthony Grade School and St. Anthony Preschool, all in Wailuku; Christ The King Child Development Center in Kahului; and Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina. The St. Joseph Preschool in Makawao operates a Catholic school program but has not yet opened for the new school year. A decision about classes on Monday, Aug. 11, has not yet been made.
• Maui Interscholastic League: All Friday and Saturday MIL pre-season football games are cancelled, including the Canada game with King Kekaulike.

County and State Closure Information:

• Non-Essential County Workers: The mayor’s office announced that it will be sending home all non-emergency county employees at noon on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, with the possible exception of county elections employees. Elections employees and walk-in voting services will remain available unless instructed otherwise by the state elections office.
• Maui Landfill Closure – Trash Collection: The Department of Environmental Management will close all County of Maui landfills at noon on Thursday, Aug. 7.  The facilities will remain closed on Friday, Aug. 8. All residential refuse collection routes for Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014 will be serviced as normal.  There will be NO residential refuse collection service on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014.  There is currently no scheduled make-up date due to unknown road and storm conditions (see below for exception). Residents are reminded to remove their trash bins from the curb or road on Thursday and to properly secure the bins to prevent damage. 
• Residential Refuse Collection – Make up Service: For customers who are on one-time per week, manual refuse collection routes only that will not be picked up this Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 due to the storm, the Solid Waste Division has made provisions to have these routes rescheduled to Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014. No other missed routes from Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 will be rescheduled.
• State Offices in Maui and Hawaiʻi Counties to Close: at noon on Thursday, Aug. 7 and all-day Friday, Aug. 8 due to anticipated severe weather conditions and possible flooding caused by Iselle and Julio. Employees affected by the closing of these offices should not report to work, except for departmental disaster/emergency coordinators, disaster response workers, and employees whose work involves continuing crucial operations and services, such as hospital and correctional workers. Employees who fall into one of these categories are required to report to work. A decision on state office closures for Oahu and Kauai will be made tomorrow.
• State Legislative Offices:  House Speaker Joseph M. Souki and Senate President Donna Mercado Kim announced that Legislative offices will be closed on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014.  All non-essential legislative personnel are being asked to stay at home and off the roads as tropical storms Iselle and Julio bear down on Oʻahu. The State Capitol will also be closed on Saturday, Aug. 9 as both house chambers will be used by the Office of Elections as its Control and Counting Center Operations.  Normal office hours are expected to resume on Monday, Aug. 11 unless otherwise directed. 
• State Courthouse/Judiciary: The state courthouses and judiciary offices on Hawaiʻi Island and Maui County will be closed beginning at noon on Thursday, Aug. 7, through Friday, Aug. 8, due to severe weather projected by the National Weather Service. The closures include: the Children’s Justice Centers, Offices of the Public Guardian, and Driver’s Education Offices on Hawaiʻi Island and Maui County.  In addition, Drivers Education classes scheduled in Maui County on Aug. 7 will be cancelled and rescheduled.  Family court hearings scheduled at the Molokaʻi Courthouse on Thursday, Aug. 7 and Friday, Aug. 8 will be rescheduled to Thursday, Aug. 28, and Friday, Aug. 29. Hawaiʻi Island and Maui County Courthouses are expected to reopen on Monday morning.
• Department of Agriculture Inspection Offices: in Maui County and on Hawaiʻi Island will be closed from noon on Thursday, Aug. 7 through Friday, Aug. 8.  Travelers who require Plant Quarantine inspection to transport non-domestic animals (including girds, rats, mice, chinchillas and guinea pigs) and propagative plants from Hawaiʻi Island and Maui County to other islands over the weekend should schedule inspections prior to noon on Thursday, Aug. 7.
• Airports: ***As of 8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, all of the state’s airports remain open. However, anyone traveling should contact their airline carriers directly to confirm their flights and make any changes to existing reservations prior to leaving for the airport.

Federal Closures:

• Post Offices in Maui County:  The US Postal Service management in Honolulu has issued a directive for all Post Offices on the islands of Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi to be closed on Friday, Aug. 8.  ((As of 8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, all postal facilities on Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi remain closed.)) Postal Service management is closely monitoring the path and impact of the hurricane and will make additional decisions regarding adjustments to postal operations on other islands as needed. “The safety of our employees, customers and the mail is our foremost priority,” said USPS Emergency Manager Chuck Lum. “We will resume our operations as soon as we determine that it is safe for our employees to do so.”

Transportation Closures and Cancellations:

• Port Closures: The State Department of Transportation announced the closure of ports across the state. The port of Kahului closed at 9 a.m.. Ports on Molokai and Lanai will close at noon.
• Airline Information: The Hawaii Tourism Authority was advised that American Airlines, Island Air, Mokulele, United Airlines and US Airways are among the airlines that have made flight cancellations on Thursday. The agency is encouraging anyone traveling through the weekend to contact their airline carriers directly to confirm their flights and make any changes. A full list of flight cancellations is located on the Hawaii Tourism Authority website under the special alert section and is being updated on an ongoing basis.
• Flight Cancellations: The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority has confirmed that American Airlines has cancelled two flights for Thursday, Aug. 7 – Flight #161 from LAX to Kahului and Flight #14 from Kahului to LAX.  Passengers are instructed to call the American Reservations Office (1-800-433-7300) to rebook and only go to the airport AFTER they have called and changed their reservation. Customers are urged to check directly with their airlines regarding the status of their flights.
• State Highways: The Hawaii Department of Transportation advises motorists that all state highways roadwork is suspended from the evening of Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 10 on Hawaiʻi Island, Maui and Oʻahu due to Hurricane Iselle and Julio. Road work will resume Monday, Aug. 11 if weather permits.
• Maui Bus services: are suspended on fixed routes beginning on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 7, and extending into Friday, Aug. 8. UPDATE: County officials say all Maui Bus Fixed Routes and Paratransit service will resume from 3 p.m. today (8/8), or the next available route start time after 3 pm. Commuter service will resume regular service on Saturday morning (8/9). See full schedule.
• Ferry to Lānaʻi: has suspended service after it makes its last runs on Thursday, Aug. 7. The last run to Maui was at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7.  The last run to Lānaʻi is at 12:40 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7. Ferry service to Lānaʻi is also suspended on Friday, Aug. 8. For more information please call the ferry offices at 661-3756. Please note that ferry offices will be staffed until around 4 p.m. on Thursday Aug. 7 only. There will be no staff available to answer phones on Friday.
• Molokaʻi Ferry: Per Lahaina Cruise who runs the Molokaʻi Ferry, they WILL be operating today (Friday, Aug. 8). The ferry will leave Molokaʻi at 4 p.m. and leave Maui at 6 p.m. Phone number is 357-0458 for any questions.

General Advisories:

• Upper Kula Water Conservation Advisory: At 8:36 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, county officials reported that power was out at the Olinda Water Treatment plant which means Upper Kula residents must conserve their water. Water tanks were full at the time, but no new water could be generated during the outage.  At 9:16 p.m. on Thursday, Aug 7, 2014, authorities said power had been restored to a majority of customers affected.
• Water Conservation Advisory: The Maui Department of Water Supply issued an advisory urging all customers to conserve water when Iselle impacts the county due to high winds and/or flooding that could disrupt power supply to water sources.
• Maui Electric Company: Maui Electric’s customer service offices in Kahului will be closed on Friday, Aug. 8.  Maui Electric crews are prepared and ready to respond so customers should continue to report any outages, and/or downed power lines and poles:  Maui – 871-7777, or Toll Free on Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi – 1-877-871-8461.  Full updates on power outages affecting Maui County are posted at the following direct LINK.
• Hawaii Gas Advisory:  The Hawaii Gas company is advising its propane tank and cylinder customers not to shut off their gas supply unless notified to evacuate their premises by local authorities.  If customers are ordered to evacuate and must shut off their gas, only a trained Hawaii Gas employee can turn it back on.

Business Cancellation of services – Health Service Industry:  

• Kaiser Permanente: all Maui facilities will be open Thursday except After Hours Care at Maui Lani Medical Office, which will be closed. Maui facilities closed on Friday, Aug. 8 include: Kīhei Clinic, Lahaina Clinic, Maui Lani ʻElua Clinic; Wells Street Behavioral Health Office; and the Wailuku Medical Office.  ***Update: As of 8 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, officials said the Maui Lani Medical Office will be open at 10 a.m. today (Fri. Aug. 8). All other Maui facilities will be closed today (8/8) and resume normal operations tomorrow (8/9).  
• Maui Medical Group: closing at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7 and all day on Friday, Aug. 8.  The facility anticipates being open on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., but continues to monitor the situation.
• HMSA: In anticipation of Hurricane Iselle, the Hawaiʻi Medical Service Association will close its Maui office on Lono Avenue at 2 p.m. pm on Thursday, Aug. 7.  Officials say they are taking all necessary precautions to safeguard member data and health plan operations during this time and are encouraging employees to care for their families and homes. ***Update 8/8/14: All HMSA offices on all islands are closed for Friday, Aug. 8.
• Liberty Dialysis: If you are a dialysis patient, you can call 800-626-1297 to find out what dialysis facilities are open and closed in your area.

Bank Revised Hours and Closures:  

• All eight First Hawaiian Bank Branches in Maui County – Kahana, Kahului, Kīhei, Lahaina, Pukalani, Wailea, Wailuku and Lānaʻi – will be closing early at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7 due to the approaching storm.  Update 8/8: All First Hawaiian Bank branches on Kauaʻi, Oʻahu and Maui and Lānaʻi are closed today (Friday, Aug. 8).  All Saturday banking branches are expected to open for business as usual Saturday, Aug. 9.   
• HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union: Maui-based branches in Kahului and Kīhei will close at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7 to allow time for individuals to arrive safely at their home or shelter. Maui residents may call the Member Service Center, toll free at  800-379-1300.
• Central Pacific Bank: All branches on Maui will be closing early on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014 due to Hurricane Iselle.  The Kahului, Wailuku, Kīhei and Lahaina branches will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7.  The company has announced that all branches on Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi, and Hawaiʻi Island will remain closed on Friday.  The status of operating hours on Saturday will be determined following further assessment. All CPB ATMs will be available and online banking customers can still conduct transaction on the Central Pacific Bank web site or mobile services.  Representatives at our Customer Service Center are also available by calling (808) 544-0500 or toll free at 1-800-342-8422.
• American Savings Bank:  will close all statewide branches and offices Friday, Aug. 8, as a result of the ongoing weather from Hurricane Iselle and Tropical Storm Julio. This is following the closure at noon on Thursday, Aug. 7 of all five Big Island branches and eight Maui and Molokaʻi branches scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7.  The closures do not affect ASB’s other non-branch services such as ATM access, online and mobile banking. 
• The Valley Isle Community FCU encourages you to stay off the roads if at all possible, but if it is necessary, the Kahului branch will open from 1 to 4.30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8.  The Wailuku and Lahaina branch will remain closed for the rest of the day (8/8).  ATM, Home banking, Audio response remains accessible islandwide.

Other Business Advisories:

• Honolulu Star-Advertiser: will not be delivered on Friday, Aug. 8 to the islands of Hawaiʻi, Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi because air cargo service has been suspended to those islands.  Delivery will resume on Saturday, August 9, and will include both the Friday and Saturday editions.  Complimentary online and mobile content will be available throughout the storms.
• Aloha Recycling: All five locations – Kīhei, UH Maui College, Haʻikū, Makawao, and the main location at Amala Place in Kahului – will be closed by 12 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014. Reopening is dependent on the storm path of Iselle and the impending effects of Julio.
• Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center: will close effective 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, due to anticipated weather from Hurricane Iselle.  UPDATE: The Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center will open for business at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 8.  Friday’s regularly scheduled farmer’s market and all weekend stage events have been canceled.
• Cash N Carry: will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7 and remain closed on Friday, Aug. 8.
• Whalers Village Fine Shops & Restaurants:  located in Kāʻanapali will close at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, and reopen, depending on weather conditions, at noon Aug. 8. While Whalers Village is closed and for safety precautions, the general public will not be allowed on shopping center grounds including its parking lot. 
• The Maui Ocean Center: will be temporarily closed on Friday, Aug. 8.   The company plans to re-open on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 9 a.m., weather permitting.
• Servco: Due to the imminent threat of severe weather, Servco Pacific Inc. today announced it will close all of its automotive, home appliance and insurance retail locations and corporate offices statewide on Friday, Aug. 8, to ensure the safety of its employees and customers. Customers with automotive sales or service appointments scheduled for Friday that have not been contacted already, should call 808-564-1150 to reschedule. Servco Maui locations that will be closed on Friday include: Servco Automotive and Servco Auto Insurance on Hoʻohana Street in Kahului; Servco lexus Maui on Kele Street; Servco Subaru on Hāna Hwy; and Servo Tire Company on Kaʻahumanu Avenue.
• Times Super Market in Kīhei and Honokōwai will close at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, per Maui Police.

Activities and Event Cancellations:

• Boys and Girls Clubs of Maui: clubhouses are closed through Friday.
• The Lahaina Second Friday Town Party, night of Aug. 8, is cancelled. The next Lahaina Town Party will resume Sept. 12.
• Maui Calls at the MACC: The Maui Calls 2014 event at the MACC is cancelled. It will be postponed until the next feasible date.
• The Hunter Education Class: scheduled on Aug. 7 and 9, 2014 at Baldwin High School is cancelled. Pre-registered students will be re-registered in September and October classes. Please contact the Hunter Education Program’s registration hotline at 1-800-353-4868 for more information.
• Kahului Jodo Mission: will not be having their OBON festival on Saturday, Aug. 9. There will be NO reschedule.  Pre-sale of laulau will be rescheduled for pickup between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Aug. 14, 2014.  Should anyone need to contact someone of Kahului Jodo Mission or have any concerns please call Rev.
