Big Brother Big Sisters of Maui hosts a community art exhibit this weekend featuring works created by “Bigs” and “Littles” from the organization’s School Based Mentoring Programs.

The public art exhibit was created in collaboration with the Honolulu Museum of Art, and is being hosted by Whole Foods Maui at 3 p.m. this Sunday, Aug. 24.  Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

The projects were implemented through the Honolulu Museum of Art’s outreach program, “Art to Go,” which aims to nourish critical thinking and self-esteem through engaging art experiences.

The projects are designed to spark, creativity, self-reflection, and cultural understanding.

As part of the project, students explored a range of media and honed their artistic expression with the support and guidance of a teaching artist.

Similar “Art to Go” programs were offered at more than 50 schools and community organizations across the state over the past year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui has partnered with the “Art to Go” project since 2004.

Local Artist Maggie Sutrov, a professional artist and arts educator who grew up on Maui, facilitated the projects with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui.

Under her instruction, she showed participants how to create multi-media portraits of each other by tracing facial features on a transparency that was clipped to a transparent clipboard.

After creating the initial sketch the participants colored the portraits with oil pastels, mounted them to paper and created a decorative boarder.

“The final result is a collection of amazing art work that portrays the spirit and positive impacts of Big Brothers Big Sister of Maui’s mentoring programs,” organization leaders said in a press release announcing the upcoming exhibit.
