Three teens and an officer injured following shooting near Honolua on Maui

Police have launched an attempted murder investigation following a reported shooting in West Maui early this morning (Sunday, July 18, 2010). According to police reports, an officer responding to the incident was struck by the suspect vehicle and three teens were transported to the hospital for injuries.

Officers initially responded to a report at 4:14 a.m. of numerous gun shots fired at an area known as “Windmill Beach” in West Maui. When officers approached the area, a vehicle was seen leaving the area. Officers then stopped the vehicle and talked to the occupants, who identified the suspect vehicle as a Toyota pickup.

While the officers obtained more information from the occupants; the occupants pointed to a pickup truck approaching the officers as the vehicle involved.

The officers attempted to stop the pickup truck, but police reports indicate the truck accelerated toward the officers, striking one of the officers. Assisting officers responded, firing at the pickup truck, which fled the area and was pursued. The pickup later stopped at the Honolua Bay Lookout.

There were five occupants in the pickup truck; two were arrested and transported to the police station; three occupants suffered injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment.

The injuries included: (1) An 18 year old male who suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries. He was flown to Honolulu for treatment. (2) An 18 year old male who suffered an non-life threatening injury to his left ear. He was in surgery at last report at Maui Memorial Medical Center. (3) A 17 year old male suffered injury to his buttock. He was treated and released from Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The police officer injured in the incident suffered minor injury and was treated and released by paramedics on scene.
