Visitor Airlifted After Falling 30 Feet From “Bamboo Trail” Waterfall

A visitor was airlifted from the Kailua area of East Maui on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, after suffering injuries in a fall while hiking in the area often referred to as the “Bamboo Forest.”

The 25-year-old man from Germany fell about 30 feet from the top of a waterfall, sustaining injuries to his chin, jaw, and elbow, according to Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Crews from Engine 2 and Rescue 10 responded to the incident at 3:58 p.m., along with the department’s Air 1 helicopter.

Fire officials say the man was airlifted to a secured landing zone and then transferred to Maui Medevac, which flew the patient to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
