Voter Registration Deadline Nears, Oct. 6, 2014

The state Office of Elections and County Clerks of Hawaiʻi reminds individuals that the last day to register to vote in the general election is Monday, Oct. 6, 2014.

According to Office of Elections data, the State of Hawaiʻi an estimated 700,000 registered voters, and more than 80,000 registered voters in Maui County.

To be eligible to vote in the state, you must be a US citizen, a resident of Hawaiʻi and at least 18 years old.

Elections officials say registered voters that have changed their name or moved since the last election should re-register before the voter registration deadline.

During the 2014 primary election held in August, there were a total of 85,581 individuals registered to vote in Maui County.  Of that number, only 33.1% or 28,337 individuals actually voted.  That included 12,105 individuals voting at precincts, and 16,232 absentee ballots cast.

During the last general election in 2012, voter registration was 86,053 in Maui County.  Of that number, 56.8% or 48,915 individuals voted. That included 30,854 ballots cast at precincts on election day, and 18,061 ballots cast during absentee voting.

Completed voter registration forms must be turned in to the appropriate County Clerk by 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, or postmarked by Oct. 6, 2014 if mailed.

The general election is on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014.
