Target Partners in Kahului Beach Cleanup, Sponsors Surf Event at Honolua

Future Maui retailer, Target is partnering with the Surfrider Foundation Maui Chapter and Mālama Maui Nui to clean up Hoaloha Park at Kahului Harbor on Sunday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Organizers say an estimated 100 volunteers are expected to attend.

During Sunday’s beach cleanup at Hoaloha Park, volunteers will be treated to shave ice, lunch, and special Target giveaways.  Organizers say the heavily used area is a favorite of surfers, standup paddlers, and canoe clubs, and is in frequent need of cleaning.

The cleanup is being held in conjunction with the Target Maui Pro women’s surf competition, which kicks off on Saturday at Honolua Bay.

The Women’s World Championship event runs from Nov. 22 to Dec. 6, 2014, and is the last stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour.  The Target sponsored competition features defending champion Stephanie Gilmore, as well as Sally Fitzgibbons, and Tyler Wright.

The national retail chain will be the anchor tenant at the future Pu‘unēnē Shopping Center, currently under construction in Central Maui.  Store officials say the Pu‘unēnē branch will not be open in time for this years holiday season, but has a planned grand-opening set for March of 2015.
