Matson Crew Honored for Rescuing Boaters Caught in Hurricane Julio

The US Coast Guard presented awards to crew members of the Matson ship Manukai for the Aug. 10, 2014, rescue of three men from a sailboat caught in the winds and seas of Hurricane Julio off of Oʻahu.
The Meritorious Public Service award was presented on Monday to John Bloomingdale, Captain of the Manukai, 3rd Mate Justin Moore and 2nd Engineer Josef Eggert.

The Matson crew rescued Ben Nealy, Lee Nealy and Mike Vanway who were aboard the 42-foot sailboat, Walkabout, which was dismasted and flooded while enroute from Stockton, Calif., to Honolulu.
The rescue was conducted under coordination between the sailing vessel, the US Coast Guard, and the container ship, which shot a line to the sailboat and pulled the boat alongside the Manukai.
The sailboat passengers disembarked their damaged boat and climbed a 30-foot ladder draped onto the Manukai.
The Coast Guard reports that on-scene conditions during the rescue included winds of 20 mph and 13-foot seas.
The Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service award is the second highest award presented by the Coast Guard to recognize individuals for unusual courage in their assistance to the public.
