MEO Honors Maui Community Correctional Center as Volunteer of 2014

Maui Economic Opportunity has presented the Maui Community Correctional Center and its Workline Program with the 2014 Volunteer of the Year award. Lyn McNeff, MEO’s chief executive officer, announced the award during a luncheon honoring the many MEO volunteers. 

“The MCCC staff and workline have been longstanding partners for more than 40 years,” said McNeff. “During this time, the MCCC workline, supervised by correctional staff, has provided numerous hours of labor assisting MEO with its many projects and events.”

MCCC has assisted with numerous construction projects, past and current. Volunteers have helped in constructing a hale at the Ka‘ahumanu Avenue site, building a ramp for the Transportation and Youth Services trailers, clearing land at Ke Kehua, demolishing and removing debris from a building at Vineyard Street, working at disabilities and senior fairs, cleaning windows, as well as hauling boxes and moving furniture.

MEO estimates that it has saved over $63,000 annually through MCCC’s help, enabling more grant monies to fund direct services.

“During this past year, MEO served more than 23,000 individuals and families, touching more than 40,000 lives,” said McNeff. “This would not have been possible without the assistance of entities like the Maui Community Correctional Center staff and workline.”
