Plantation Inn Redevelopment Project Planned
By Wendy Osher
The Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel is proposing the redevelopment of the Plantation Inn, a bed and breakfast-type hotel establishment located on Lahainaluna Road in West Maui.
The proposed action involves one-acre of land owned by the Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel which currently houses two two-story buildings with 19 guest rooms, Gerard’s Restaurant, guest parking, a landscaped courtyard and pool deck, and a swimming pool.
The proposed project calls for the construction of a new two-story building with 14 guestrooms, a new nine-stall parking lot on Panaʻewa Street, a new 11-stall parking lot and driveway on Lahainaluna Road, and related infrastructure improvements.
The Maui Planning Commission voted to approved the Final Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact determination during its Jan. 27, 2015 meeting.
As part of the proposed project, the three parcels that the property sits on will be consolidated and re-subdivided to create a single lot and two road-widening lots. A former office building, and a former dwelling and barbershop on the property will be demolished as part of the plan.
The document states that upon completion of the redevelopment plan, the number of guest rooms will increased from 19 to 32; and the number of onsite parking stalls will increase from 17 to 29.
Chris Hart & Partners prepared the Environmental Assessment and application for a Special Management Area use permit for the redevelopment.
Since the proposed action will occur within the Lahaina National Historic District, an EA was prepared to meet environmental requirements.
