Maryland Visitor Pulled From Ocean in Nāpili

A visitor from Maryland died after being pulled from the water at Honokeana Cove in Nāpili on Maui over the weekend.

Police have since identified the man as Montford L. Carpenter, 72, of Baldwin, Maryland.

According to police reports, Carpenter was found approximately 15 to 20 feet from shore and unresponsive at around 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015.

Police say Carpenter was pulled to shore by bystanders who conducted cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.

When first responders arrived on scene, live-saving measures continued and the man was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

According to police reports, Carpenter was pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts.  The cause of death is unknown pending autopsy results.
