Nominations Sought for Outstanding Older Americans

Every year for the last 47 years, elderly adults in Maui County have been honored and recognized for their contributions and accomplishments with an annual awards ceremony. The County of Maui’s Office on Aging is now seeking nominees for the 47th annual Outstanding Older American Male and Female of Maui County awards.
Eligible nominees must be 65 years or older and residents of Maui County. Anyone may nominate a candidate for the award including individuals, clubs and organizations. Previous winners cannot be nominated.
A luncheon honoring the winners will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 15, at the Maui Beach Hotel’s Elleair Rainbow Ballroom. The award coincides with the nationwide Older Americans Month.
“Older Americans Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of community engagement as a tool for enhancing the well-being of older adults,” said Deborah Stone-Walls, Maui County’s executive on aging. “Together, we can promote healthy aging, increase community involvement for older adults and tackle important issues like the prevention of elder abuse.”
In 1968, Wendell Crockett received the first award in Maui County for Outstanding Older American. Last year, Fred Ruge of Wailuku and Kanee Wright of Kaunakakai, Molokaʻi, were honored with the awards.
