No Tsunami Threat to Hawaiʻi After 6.8 Japan Quake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi following a 6.8 preliminary magnitude earthquake reported at around 11:13 a.m. HST on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, off the East Coast of Honshu, Japan, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

According to information compiled by the agency, a destructive Pacific wide tsunami has not been generated and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi

The USGS reports that the quake occurred at a depth of 38.9 km and was located:

• 21 miles SE of Ofunato, Japan;
• 26 miles SSE of Kamaishi, Japan;
• 32 miles SSE of Otsuchi, Japan;
• 39 miles SE of Tono, Japan; and
• 256 miles NNE of Tokyo, Japan.
