No Tsunami Threat to Hawaiʻi After 6.9 Solomon Islands Earthquake

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after a 6.9 (preliminary) magnitude earthquake reported at 12:49 p.m. HST on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 in the Santa Cruz Islands region near the Solomon Islands, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The agency says that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is not tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

The USGS reports that the quake was located: 111 miles W of Lata, Solomon Islands; 304 miles ESE of Honiara, Solomon Islands; 382 miles NNW of Luganville, Vanuatu; 551 miles NNW of Port-Vila, Vanuatu; and 671 miles ESE of Arawa, Papua New Guinea.
