Visitor Dies After Being Pulled From Waters at Koki Beach

A 59-year-old visitor died after being found unresponsive in waters off of Koki Beach in East Maui yesterday afternoon.

Maui police have since identified the man as Gary Allen Norris of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The incident was reported at 2:17 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2015.

Fire officials say the victim was found by bystanders, floating face down in the waters off of Koki Beach and was pulled to shore.

According to department reports, the bystanders initiated Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.  Fire officials say CPR was continued by first responders when they arrived on scene.

The victim was transported to the Hāna Medical Clinic in critical condition, where he later died.

The cause of death has not been determined, and is pending autopsy results.
