A man who was involved in a deadly exchange of gunfire today with Maui police has since died.

Police released further details this evening saying an investigation revealed that the passenger of an SUV that was involved in a traffic stop, exited the vehicle and allegedly shot at police officers first while fleeing.

The officers, police said, returned gun fire striking the man.

The individual was taken to the hospital for treatment, however, later expired according to police reports.  The cause of death is pending autopsy results.

The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Police say the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody for questioning and later released pending further investigation.

No injuries were sustained by police officers or bystanders as a result of the incident.

A man was transported to the hospital in critical condition after exchanging gun fire with police following a traffic stop in Wailuku, according to police reports.

The incident was reported at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2015 on Lower Main Street near the Hoʻokahi Street intersection in Wailuku.

Police say the man was a passenger within a sports utility vehicle, and immediately exited the SUV when stopped.  Police say an exchange of gun fire then ensued.

According to police reports, the male responsible was struck by gun fire and was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition for treatment.

Maui police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred on Lower Main Street in Wailuku on Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2015.

The incident was reported at around 4:40 p.m.

Witnesses tell Maui Now that the victim was allegedly running from police before a shooting ensued.

Maui police have confirmed that an investigation is underway, but said details are forthcoming.
