MFD Responds to 10 Fires Over July Fourth Weekend

County of Maui, Department of Fire & Public Safety responded to 10 brushfires or structure fires between 7:30 a.m. July 4, and 7:30 a.m. July 5, 2015.

7:44 a.m.: Brushfire at Kukona Place in Wailuku burned 25 square feet of brush. Cause
was undetermined.

12:43 p.m.: Structure fire at Alani Place in Wailuku. Damages were $100,000 to structure, $15,000 to contents. Cause was undetermined.

2:01 p.m.: Brushfire at Kaiola Place in Kīhei between Piʻilani Highway and Kaiola Place burned 2 acres of
brush. Cause was undetermined.

4:04 p.m.: Brushfire at Kaiola Place in Kīhei, 150 yards south of first fire on Kaiola Place. About on-half acre of brush burned. Cause was undetermined.

7:48 p.m.: Brushfire at Shaw Street in Lahaina on old cane haul road near Lahaina Aquatic Center. 1,000 square feet of brush burned. Children were seen in the area playing with fireworks just prior.

8:55 p.m.: Brushfire at Alahao Street in Kahului across from Kanaha Beach Park campground. 600 square feet of brush burned. Children were seen in the area playing with fireworks just prior.

9:05 p.m.: Brushfire at Haulani Street in Pukalani on residential street. 250 square feet of grass burned. Children were seen in the area playing with fireworks just prior.

10:01 p.m.: Unscheduled sugar cane fire on Baldwin Avenue in Pāʻia. Sugar cane field mauka of Loina Place; homes on Loina Place were evacuated. Fire consumed 3 acres. Children were seen in the area playing with fireworks just prior.

10:17 p.m.: Brushfire at Kahawai Street in Wailuku between Kahawai Street and ʻĪao
Stream. 50 square feet of grass burned. Children were seen in the area playing with fireworks just prior.

10:34 p.m.: Brushfire, Holomua Road in Pāʻia, ¼ mile mauka of Hāna Highway. 750 square feet of brush burned. Cause was undetermined.
