Ask the Mayor: Can Waiehu Golf Course be Limited to Foursomes?
Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.
Dear Mayor:
Q: Can the number of golfers playing in a group at Waiehu Golf Course be limited to foursomes? Groups of five or six is the cause of slow play and makes it unenjoyable for the rest of the golfers who stick to the typical foursome. At a minimum, can groups of five or six be allowed only after noon?
This past weekend, we followed two groups of six and the round took five hours. There were at least three holes open in front of the group. All 12 golfers knew each other and could have played with three foursomes instead and played at a faster pace.
A: Waiehu Golf Course has always allowed groups of six due to the intent of the course being a community municipal golf course for everyone to enjoy. We do understand that at times slow play is an issue. The immediate solution the Department of Parks & Recreation is currently looking into is to provide marshals on the course to keep the play moving.
