Kanahā Bike Rides Planned on Aug. 22

The Maui Bicycling League will hold bike rides for beginner and intermediate-level riders on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015.

The rides will start at 10 a.m. at the gate at the end of Amala Place near the last entrance to Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului.  (Parking and restrooms are located at Kanahā Beach Park).

The two groups will leave from the gate and will each have a ride leader, with rides to be structured as follows:

• Beginner bicyclists: will ride along the multi-use pathway behind the airport to Kaunoa Senior Center, and then continue along the bike route to the area often referred to as “Baby Beach” near Wawau Point in Spreckelsville. Families are welcome in the beginner group, and ride time will be approximately an hour to an hour and 20 minutes.  Ride speeds will be 12 miles per hour or less.
• Intermediate bicyclists: are invited to ride in the bicycle lane along Amala Place.  The group will turn left on Hobron Avenue (which turns into Kamehameha) and make a left turn on Puʻunēnē Avenue.  Riders will then make a right turn on the Kūihelani Highway using the shoulder and bike lane and then make a right turn on the Honoapiʻilani Highway. Riders will follow Honoapiʻilani Highway into Wailuku and make a right turn onto Main Street and loop back to Kanahā Beach Park. Ride time will be approximately one hour and 20 minutes. Riders must be able to maintain speeds of 15 to 17 miles per hour.

Riders participating in the rides must wear bicycle helmets and are asked to provide their own refreshments.

The ride on Aug. 22 is the Maui Bicycling League’s first monthly ride. The group plans to host a ride each month based on feedback it receives from participants. This month’s ride will be on a Saturday, but future months might include a Sunday or weeknight ride.

The rides will be complimentary for Maui Bicycling League members. Non-members and visitors are also invited to join the ride but are asked to consider joining the Maui Bicycling League or make a small donation to help fund the organization’s efforts for more bicycle access pathways and bike lanes on Maui.
