Team Primo of Wailea Canoe Club took the overall title at the 2015 Maui Nui Canoe Race over the weekend.

The 5th annual race included three days of competition beginning on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, with crews launching from Maliko along Maui’s north shore.

The races spanned three days, three islands, and covered more than 100 miles. Day one featured competition from Maliko on Maui to Kamalo on Molokaʻi. On day two, crews paddled around the back side of Lāna’i, landing at Hulopoʻe Bay. On day three, crews returned to Maui, ending the race at Hanaka’ō’ō Beach Park in West Maui.

Team Primo of Wailea Canoe Club took the title of 2015 Overall Race Champion, which included a perpetual trophy and a $1000 cash award. Crew members included: Kekoa Cramer, Kai Bartlett, Tyson Kubo, Mael Carey, Travis Baptiste, Felipe Gomes, Robert Brede , Kekupaʻa Naeʻole and Ryan Murphy.

Also receiving champion status in the women’s division was Team Maui Linen whose crew members include: Pauahi Ioane, Shien-lu Stokesbary, Emili Janchevis, Magdalena Carey, Mealoha Hooton, Sydney Kalipi, Kalisi Fa’anunu Mausio and Lauren Denton.

The event was made possible through a grant from the County of Maui Office of Economic Development, Kahana Canoe Club and Smythe Fujiwara Design.  Other partners included: Maui Jim, Aloha Petroleum, Matson, Lahaina Fish Co., Kapualei Ranch,Trilogy, Pulama Lāna’i, Nani Watanabe, Hui Wa’a O Lāna’i, Coalition for a Drug Free Lāna’i, Dawnalyn Fujiwara and Councilmember Elle Cochran.
