Early Morning Structure Fire Burns Garage of Olowalu Home

A homeowner is safe after awaking early Friday morning to find a fire burning in the detached garage of their two-story Olowalu home.

The incident was reported at 4:20 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, 2015 at a home on Luawai Street.

Maui Fire Services Officer Edward Taomoto said the homeowner coincidentally woke up to use the restroom and saw the fire burning in the garage.

According to Taomoto, the homeowner was able to knock down the flames with a garden hose before crews arrived on scene.  Upon arrival at 4:30 a.m., firefighters found the fire still smoldering and worked to completely extinguish the blaze.

According to Taomoto, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.  He said damages were estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $2,000 to its contents.

No injuries were reported.

Units responding to the scene included an Engine, Ladder and Tanker unit from Lahaina, an engine from Kīhei, and a Battalion Chief.
